MAV bio
MAV – FULL ARTIST BIO
Mav is a Mexican-Puerto Rican hip-hop artist, storyteller, and community builder with deep roots in both Chicago and Phoenix. Born on Fullerton and Western—the heart of the Puerto Rican movement in 1980s Chicago—Mav was shaped by culture, chaos, and survival from an early age. After his parents divorced, he was sent to live in Carrizo Springs, Texas, a small border town where his mother’s roots ran deep. The constant moving between cities and realities gave Mav a raw, adaptive voice that would later define his music.
Returning to Chicago in his teens, he lived on the South Side, walking the same school halls as Derrick Rose and growing up under pressure to succeed—or become another statistic. His father, who was raised in the Cabrini-Green projects after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and his mother, from Laredo, Texas by way of Roseland, exposed Mav to a blend of Black, Brown, and Boricua influences. These cross-cultural roots are evident in both his lyrical depth and musical vision.
Eventually, Mav relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where his music career truly began. In 2005, he released his debut album MicAdvancement, and independently sold over 100,000 CDs out the trunk across the Southwest. Between 2005 and 2017, he released over a dozen solo and group projects, earning a reputation for both lyricism and hustle.

THE COMEBACK:
THE PURPLE EP
(2025)
After stepping away from music following 2017, Mav returned in 2025 with The Purple EP—his first project in nearly a decade. The project was born from personal tragedy: the death of his father, which pushed him to return to the studio with new perspective and purpose.
The Purple EP is a concept-heavy record driven by emotion, reflection, and craft. Highlights include:
- “Painting Purple Skies” – a dreamy cruise song soaked in nostalgia and color
- “Off the Ropes” – verbal jousting packed with WWE references and lyrical flexes
- “Rap Villain” – a dark, introspective piece on being misunderstood despite good intentions
- “No Streets Is Exempt” ft. SyckSyllables & Romero – a grim but motivating anthem about grind, mortality, and universal struggle
